Chicken Pieces

I have just realised how much money you can save and eat tastier (maybe healthier) food, by buying whole chicken.

Here is the price comparison.

_________________pieces per pack___$perChicken
Drumsticks_____5@$2.34___________$0.94
Wings__________12@$4.99__________$1.66
Breasts_________2@$5.74 __________$5.74
Thighs__________4@$2.90__________ $1.45
Total Chicken______________________$9.79

Whole Chicken_____________________$8.17

Savings $1.62

Now $1.62 may not sound to much, but it is still 15-20% saving.
You also get to make a delicious chicken stock too.

A whole new world

Perceptions change when you have a baby. Things that seem so established before hand suddenly change and you find new meaning in them.

For example

Tylenol:
Before: A tablet that you could take to reduce the effects of being out the night before as you have guests for dinner this evening
After: A tablet that must be taken with a cup of coffee in order to start the day

Tiredness Headaches:
Before: A headaches that would rarely build due to lack of sleep and excess partying (or work!)
After: The headache you get when you wake up in the morning

The Cat:
Before: A friendly companion in the world
After: The animal that does not obey the sleeping rules and wakes everyone up all the time

Beer:
Before: Good times and laughs with friends
After: What is that?

Takeouts:
Before: Quiet night in together
After: Entertainment

I with post more as I think of them

Low Calorie Sweetners

Have you ever read the back of the packet on Low calorie sweeteners.
I had not until recently, but having read the controversy around Aspartame, I had a look.

It reads (this is from a packet of Sweet'N'Low)

INGREDIENTS: Dextrose, Sodium Cyclamate (34%), Silicon Dioxide. Cyclamate to be used only on the advice of a physician. Per packet: 2 calories, Carbohydrate 0.5g

Let me replay this.

INGREDIENTS: Dextrose, Sodium Cyclamate (34%), Silicon Dioxide.
Cyclamate to be used only on the advice of a physician. Per packet: 2 calories, Carbohydrate 0.5g

This is saying do not eat unless you have the ok from your doctor!. I don't so am sticking with sugar if possible.

Garage sale

We had a garage sale this weekend. Was a big success and were able to
see that things when to a good home and would still be used (rather than
throwing away). Overall think they are a really great idea.

Got me thinking though were did the name garage sale come from.
There is some irony surely that there is one one letter difference
between garage sale and garbage sale?

Fieramosca Toronto

Ate here over the weekend.
Food was good and definitely hungry man portions, they were huge.

Linux is NOT Windows

This is a good analogy in the difference between windows and linux, linked to my last post.

Linux isNOT Windows: "Look at it this way: Step outside and take a look at all the different vehicles driving along the road. These are all vehicles designed with more or less the same purpose: To get you from A to B via the roads. Note the variety in designs.

But, you may be thinking, car differences are really quite minor: they all have a steering wheel, foot-pedal controls, a gear stick, a handbrake, windows & doors, a petrol tank. . . If you can drive one car, you can drive any car!

Quite true. But did you not see that some people weren't driving cars, but were riding motorbikes instead. . ?

Switching from one version of Windows to another is like switching from one car to another. Win95 to Win98, I honestly couldn't tell the difference. Win98 to WinXP, it was a bigger change but really nothing major.

But switching from Windows to Linux is like switching from a car to a motorbike. They may both be OSes/road vehicles. They may both use the same hardware/roads. They may both provide an environment for you to run applications/transport you from A to B. But they use fundamentally different approaches to do so.

Windows/cars are not safe from viruses/theft unless you install an antivirus/lock the doors. Linux/motorbikes don't have viruses/doors, so are perfectly safe without you having to install an antivirus/lock any doors.

Or look at it the other way round:"

Linux for my laptop

I have reinstalled Linux, (xubuntu) on my laptop.
I must say that the usability has improved so much since the earlier
versions and my purchased copy of Mandrake Linux. There are so many
programs, most are useful and the interface is so clean.

The one program that they don't have and this has required a dual boot
on the system is FeedDemon. FeedDemon is another great program and is
the only one not yet covered under Linux.

All this said, bit by bit I am gradually becoming a convert.
It is the commoditisation of software and operating systems. The days
of fat margins are gradully starting to fade I feel.

Cravings

Yesterday we went to this restaurant called Cravings in Toronto. The
menu outside looked ordinary and the cravings theme seemed a little over
done. This was to the point of delaying us eating there for a while.
However this week we tried it and I am very happy to report that the
food was excellent. It is one of those rare and gem of a resturant,
understated menu, really well executed food.
Well worth the trip (asian food).

Cravings is at 3393 Yonge Street, Toronto, 416-322-2200

Ice Hockey and Hair

What is it with Ice Hockey players. Having been taken to a recent game
live I have taken a little more interest in the game. It is exciting
and fun, yes, but they all look like they have spend 4months in the
bush, wild hair and beards. Is really quite strange to watch.
