Is India a consumerist, individualist society?

India could be the ultimate consumerist society in waiting.
The infrastructure is crumbling, and it seems like once you build something, buy something or do anything in India - you do not maintain it or fix it, but wait to buy a new one.
(This can be anything from light fittings to hotel rooms to the roads and buildings).
Scary thing is what would happen if you inject lets buy something new into this equation - the ultimate, largest consumerist society?......
