The hype around mobile payments sometimes obscures the fact that not only aren’t there yet any clear winners – there’s not even a clear market for services that have a lot of potential, but which most ordinary consumers seem reluctant to embrace. On the corporate side, everybody wants a slice of the potential multi-billion dollar pie. That’s cluttered the mobile payments landscape with so many products and solutions – and no real infrastructure and platforms – that it has actually slowed down the potential acceptance of paying for goods with your smartphone.
Take the call. It is virtually impossible to resolve a problem without addressing it head on. The best way for borrowers to handle a debt they can’t pay is to talk with the lender as soon as possible. Then they should work out a plan to keep the debt current with a smaller payment or to seek a temporary delay until they can pay something.
This is an interesting simple ratio. Credit Card Debt / Savings in bank.
Rumors of the spendthrift American consumer may be slightly exaggerated. Bankrate’s 2013 February Financial Security Index found that a majority of consumers — by a narrow margin — say they have more savings than credit card debt.
Dan Berce, CEO of GM Financial, said the period of record-low delinquencies and credit losses for bad loans for the industry is just about over. “It’s clear this trend has peaked,” he said.
Taking on the role of a CRO is not for the faint of heart – even the title grants you a certain degree of unpopularity. You’re the bearer of potential bad news when it comes to strategic decision making. It is your job to provide your boss and peers with possible outcomes of scenarios they often don’t want to hear about.
Are you going to succeed because you return emails a few minutes faster, tweet a bit more often and stay at work an hour longer than anyone else?
I think that’s unlikely. When you push to turn intellectual work into factory work (which means more showing up and more following instructions) you’re racing to the bottom.
Buzz is a function of both interest and timing. If 100 people talk about something over the course of a week, it pales in comparison to 100 people talking about something right now. Conversations beget conversations. The next big thing, the it girl, the one of the moment–most buzz is meta-buzz, talk about the talk. Think about it… Superbowl buzz is almost entirely about the buzz, not about the game. It’s the sync that matters.
It’s no secret that financial consumers are warming up to mobile banking, largely for reasons of convenience.
Eighteen people have been charged with stealing at least $200m (£127m) in a credit card fraud ring, possibly one of the largest in US history.
“The defendants and their conspirators stole hundreds of millions of dollars through a scheme repeated thousands of times to create more than 7,000 false identities and fraudulently obtain tens of thousands of credit cards (the “Fraud Cards”). The scheme involved a three-step process in which the defendants would:
- “Make up” a false identity by creating fraudulent identification documents and a fraudulent credit profile with the major credit bureaus.
- “Pump up” the credit of the false identity by providing false information about that identity’s creditworthiness to the credit bureaus. Believing the furnished information to be accurate, the credit bureaus would incorporate this material into the false identity’s credit report, making it appear that the false identity had excellent credit.
- “Run up” large loans using the false identity. The higher the fraudulent credit score, the larger the loans that the defendants could obtain. These loans were never repaid, and the defendants reaped the profits.”
Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney says Canada’s economy is in the midst of what he believes will be a successful transition from over-dependence on borrowing to production that will include a softer housing market but stronger exports.
No one knows for sure how many individual pages are on the web, but right now, it’s estimated that there are more than 14 billion. Recently, though, Hungarian physicist Albert-László Barabási discovered something surprising about this massive number: Like actors in Hollywood connected by Kevin Bacon, from every single one of these pages you can navigate to any other in 19 clicks or less.
The majority of us rely on “external memory” of some kind. Whether it’s calendars, to-do lists, notes, or even Google Maps, we frequently outsource our memories to paper. I wanted to see how much I could remember if I ditched all these. Here’s how it went.
After centuries of hearing sailors’ sea monster tales and finding tentacle-y masses of flesh washed up on shores, scientists have finally managed to capture video of Architeuthis, the elusive giant squid.
It took a three-man team more than 400 hours and 100 sessions in a tiny submarine to finally score footage of the creature in the deep—the really deep. The crew took the video at a depth of nearly a third of a mile beneath the surface of the Pacific just off the coast of Japan.

How did the Galactic Empire ever cement its hold on the Star Wars Universe? The war machine built by Emperor Palpatine and run by Darth Vader is a spectacularly bad fighting force, as evidenced by all of the pieces of Death Star littering space. But of all the Empire’s failures, none is a more spectacular military fiasco than the Battle of Hoth at the beginning of The Empire Strikes Back.
Diet pop and other artificially sweetened products may cause us to eat and drink even more calories and increase our risk for obesity and Type 2 diabetes, researchers are learning.
