The Curiosity Rover is not officially on Mars to search for signs of life, but one scientist hopes its findings will prove his claim to have found organic material there in nearly 30 years ago.Gilbert Levin – who led the ‘labelled release’ experiment on Nasa’s 1976 Viking mission to the Red Planet – is hoping that Curiosity will find evidence proving his claim to have found carbon-based molecules there.If it does, he is ready to demand that his refuted discovery of life on Mars is reinstated.

A giant fish rarely seen in the North Sea has washed up on a Norfolk beach.

The sunfish, which can grow to weigh up to 2,200 lbs (1,000kg) according to the British Marine Life Study Society, was found dead at Overstrand on Sunday morning.

Consuming large quantities of a key ingredient in beer can protect against winter sniffles and even some serious illnesses in small children, a Japanese brewery said citing a scientific study.

A chemical compound in hops, the plant brewers use to give beer its bitter taste, provides an effective guard against a virus that can cause severe forms of pneumonia and bronchitis in youngsters, Sapporo Breweries said Wednesday.

But now, physicist Enzo Di Fabrizio, a professor at the Magna Graecia University in Catazaro, Italy, has snapped the very first direct picture of the structure of DNA.

New numbers from Statistic Canada show consumer debt levels hit an all-time high in the third quarter.

The debt-to-disposable-income ratio came in at 164.6 per cent for the three months ended Sept. 30, up from 163.3 per cent in the second quarter.

While the ratio continues to grow, it was a smaller increase than seen in the previous quarter.

Canadian consumers appear to be getting the message that their borrowing binge simply couldn’t run at such a fevered pace.

In its review, the Bank of Canada said that the growth of consumer credit has “continued to moderate” in the past six months, but that it is eclipsing the growth of disposable income and that its simulations “continue to suggest that households are vulnerable to adverse economic shocks.”
